The ₹5 Lakh Health Mistake We Make in Our 40s: We Spend on Disease, But Almost Nothing on Staying Well

The strange way we spend lakhs treating disease and pennies preventing it.
Every year, we renew our health insurance: ₹10 lakh cover. ₹25 lakh cover. ₹50 lakh cover. Maybe even a crore. We feel responsible.
“At least if something happens, we are covered.”
Read that sentence again.
If something happens.
Our entire concept of being financially responsible about health is largely built around preparing for something to go wrong. There is something fundamentally strange about this. We have created elaborate financial plans for being sick.
But where is our financial plan for staying well?
The Health Budget That Doesn't Exist!
Think about your annual financial planning. There is a holiday budget, education, budget, investment budget, home-maintenance budget, car-maintenance budget, even a beauty and grooming budget and there is definitely an insurance budget.
But ask someone: “What is your annual preventive health budget?”
Its not the cost of your health insurance premium or your annual master health check-up - these do not kee p you healthy! They can idetify when something goes wrong and support to fix it!
How much money did you deliberately spend last year trying to keep the machinery inside your body functioning well?
We Maintain Almost Everything We Own
Your Car is serviced diligently once a year!
The air conditioner is serviced before summer.
The water purifier gets new filters.
Homes - painted, repaired and renovated.
Our phones receive software updates.
Even machines that appear to be functioning perfectly are periodically serviced because we understand one very simple principle: Maintenance is cheaper than repair.
Yet with the most sophisticated machine we will ever own — the human body — many of us follow exactly the opposite philosophy.
Use it until something goes wrong.
Then repair it.
The ₹5 Lakh Question!
Imagine two health budgets.
Budget A
Health insurance premium.
Annual master health check-up.
Doctor visits when required.
Medication when required.
Hospital expenses if something goes wrong.
This is what most of us call healthcare.
But look carefully.
Much of that budget is actually designed around detecting, managing or paying for disease.
Now imagine another budget.
Budget B
Good nutrition.
Sleep.
Movement.
Strength.
Mental wellbeing.
Stress management.
Gut and digestive health.
Maintaining healthy metabolic function.
Correcting genuine nutritional deficiencies.
Recovery.
Preventive medical evaluation.
And, where appropriate, professionally supervised wellness interventions.
That is a health-maintenance budget.
The two are not interchangeable.
We need both.
Health Insurance Won't Keep You Healthy
Health insurance is essential. It protects you financially when something goes wrong. But insurance and prevention perform fundamentally different jobs.
Insurance protects your finances from illness. It does not automatically protect your health from deterioration.
That distinction matters!
Your Annual Health Check-Up Isn't Keeping You Healthy Either
Do NOT confuse measuring health with creating health.
We do our blood tests.
Sugar — normal.
Cholesterol — acceptable.
Liver — fine.
Kidney — fine.
Thyroid — fine.
We proudly send the report to the family WhatsApp group.
ALL NORMAL.
Fantastic.
Now what?
Wait another twelve months and check whether something has become abnormal?
A blood test is a measurement. It isn't automatically an intervention.
Just like - checking your bank balance every month doesn't make you wealthier. It simply tells you where you stand. You still have to decide what you're going to do with that information.
Health is no different.
And Your Gym Membership?
This is where another misconception enters the conversation.
Most people consider exercise their primary investment in health.
And exercise is enormously important.
Please exercise.
Movement supports circulation and lymphatic flow.
Cardiovascular exercise improves cardiorespiratory fitness.
Strength training builds and preserves muscle, which plays an important role in metabolic regulation, mobility and healthy ageing.
Exercise keeps you fit.
But please don't confuse being fit with being healthy.
They overlap enormously.
But...They are not the same thing.
I can show you people who can run 10 kms without stopping, lift extraordinary weights or train six days a week — and still struggle with terrible gut health, reflux, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, GERD, hair loss, poor sleep or hormonal problems.
And I can show you someone whose digestive health is excellent, who sleeps beautifully, wakes up energetic and whose metabolic markers look good — but ask them to trek 2 kms uphill and they may be huffing and puffing halfway through.
The first person may be extremely fit without being optimally healthy.
The second may be healthy without being particularly fit.
Ideally, we should work towards being both.
So What Does “Healthy” Actually Feel Like?
When we talk about investing in health at NineO2, we're not talking only about how your body looks from the outside or what it is physically capable of doing.
We're interested in what is happening inside.
How is your liver doing?
Are you developing fatty liver?
How are your triglycerides and other metabolic markers trending?
Are vitamin D, B12 and other important nutrients adequate for you?
How is your gut behaving?
How well do you sleep?
How consistently energetic do you feel?
How does your body respond to food?
How frequently are you reaching for medication simply to get through recurring symptoms?
Because health, to me, also looks like this:
You don't need motivation, three alarms and enormous willpower simply to get yourself out of bed every morning.
You wake up feeling restored.
The energy you had at 8 AM after a good shower and breakfast hasn't completely deserted you by 4 PM.
You enjoy food. And your body doesn't complain every time you decide to enjoy something special.
Dinner doesn't end with a burning sensation travelling up your throat.
A busy week doesn't automatically mean constipation.
Headaches aren't something you've learned to live around with a strip of tablets permanently sitting in your handbag.
Your skin glows.
And your hair fall doesn't leave a trail documenting everywhere you've walked around the house.
That's the health we're talking about.
Not perfection.
Not never becoming ill.
Not chasing one supposedly “perfect” number on a blood report.
It is a body that, most days, functions quietly and efficiently enough that you don't have to constantly think about it.
So What Are You Actually Investing In?
STOP counting an annual health check-up or a gym membership as an investment into your health. Again - they are important. Necessary. But different.
Your investment in health is what you deliberately do throughout the year to support the environment in which your organs and systems have to function.
Nutrition.
Sleep.
Mental wellbeing.
Gut health.
Managing weight and visceral fat where appropriate.
Correcting clinically identified nutritional deficiencies appropriately.
Addressing metabolic dysfunction early.
Getting persistent symptoms investigated rather than repeatedly suppressing them and carrying on.
And occasionally doing something modern life gives us remarkably little opportunity to do:
Stop. Take stock. Reset.
DETOX.
The word has been so abused by the wellness industry that perhaps we need to reclaim it. Detox isn't drinking green juice for three days and hoping your liver sends you a thank-you card.
At NineO2, we have customised structured DETOX protocol based on
The person.
Their food.
Their digestion.
Their bowel health.
Their hydration.
Their metabolic health.
Their nutritional status.
Their lifestyle.
Their sleep.
Their stress.
Once a Year, Make Your Internal Health the Priority
We service our cars periodically even when they're running perfectly.
We clean filters.
We update systems.
We maintain machines precisely because we don't want them to fail.
Yet somehow, when it comes to our bodies, our strategy is:
“My reports aren't terrible yet, so I'll carry on.”
Perhaps once a year, your internal health deserves more attention than that.
Take stock.
Check your metabolic health.
Review your nutrition.
Understand your deficiencies.
Look at your gut health.
Look at your sleep.
Look at your stress.
Look at what changed over the previous twelve months.
And then do something with that information.
“But I Don't Have Time.”
This may be the most expensive sentence we repeatedly tell ourselves.
We don't have time to exercise.
We don't have time to cook.
We don't have time to sleep properly.
We don't have time to decompress.
We don't have time to investigate that persistent symptom.
We certainly don't have time to take a few days out and concentrate on ourselves.
Until something happens.
Then suddenly...
There is time for the cardiologist.
There is time for the endocrinologist.
There is time for the gastroenterologist.
There is time for scans.
There is time for physiotherapy.
There is time for medication.
There is time for hospitalisation.
There is time for recovery.
Illness has a remarkable ability to clear our calendars.
Perhaps health deserves to clear a little space in them first.
This Is Why I Created NineO2
When I conceptualised NineO2 Detox, I didn't want to create another place people visited only after they became patients.
There are hospitals and doctors far better equipped for that job.
I wanted to create a space for something that modern life leaves remarkably little room for: Deliberately stopping and paying attention to yourself.
A point in the year when you stop, take stock and consciously put your health back on the agenda.
What If Wellness Became an Annual Expense?
This is the cultural shift I would love to see.
Imagine if every working adult created an annual Health Maintenance Budget.
Perhaps it's ₹25,000.
Perhaps ₹50,000.
Perhaps ₹1 lakh.
And the money certainly doesn't all have to be spent at NineO2.
Spend it improving the food you eat.
Spend it correcting genuine deficiencies.
Spend it on your mental health.
Spend it dealing with digestive symptoms you've normalised.
Spend it fixing your sleep.
Spend it addressing metabolic problems before they become bigger problems.
Spend some of it taking a few days away from your usual routine and focusing entirely on your physical and mental wellbeing.
Just budget for health before disease claims the budget for you.
Because Prevention Shouldn't Be a Privilege
Healthcare is expensive. It surely makes more sense to spend some time, effort and money trying to preserve health than reserving our entire health budget for the day we lose it.
Don't Wait for a Diagnosis to Give Yourself Permission
There is something I hear surprisingly often:
“Nothing is actually wrong with me. Can I still come?”
My answer is:
That's precisely when I want us to start thinking differently about health.
You don't need to wait until your body becomes a medical problem with a frightening blood report before it deserves your attention.
You are allowed to invest in your health simply because you would like to remain healthy.
So, How Much Did You Spend on Staying Healthy Last Year?
If your answer is: “I've never really thought about it.”
Perhaps that's the most useful health question you will ask yourself this year.
We plan for retirement, our children's education, our holidays.
Maybe it's time we planned for the one asset required to enjoy every single one of them.
This year, don't create only a financial budget.
Create a Health Budget.
